Our Open Access Model

The Journal of Addiction Therapy and Research (JATR) is published under the Gold Open Access model. This means that all articles are made freely and permanently available online immediately upon publication, without subscription barriers or registration requirements. Anyone can read, download, copy, distribute, print, search, or link to the full texts of articles, and use them for lawful purposes in accordance with the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License (CC BY 4.0).

Accessibility = Equity: Knowledge about addiction and recovery should not be limited by geography, income, or institutional access. JATR’s open model ensures that every clinician, researcher, and affected community can benefit from evidence-based research.

Licensing and Author Rights

Under the CC BY 4.0 License:

  • Authors retain copyright and full control over their published work.
  • Readers are free to share and adapt the material for any purpose, including commercial use, provided appropriate credit is given, a link to the license is provided, and any changes are indicated.
  • No additional permissions are required to reuse published material under this license.

This license supports the goals of transparency, reproducibility, and dissemination while protecting author attribution rights.

Benefits of Open Access Publishing

  • Global Reach: Articles are accessible to researchers, policymakers, clinicians, and educators worldwide without paywalls.
  • Increased Citations: Open-access articles typically achieve higher citation rates and media visibility.
  • Funder Compliance: Satisfies mandates from major research funders and institutions requiring public access to results.
  • Educational Impact: Facilitates knowledge transfer to students and training programs in addiction medicine.
  • Public Engagement: Enables journalists, NGOs and advocacy groups to translate research into policy and practice.

Article Processing Charges (APCs)

To sustain publication and archiving costs while providing unrestricted access, JATR applies an Article Processing Charge. The fee covers editorial management, peer review, professional typesetting, online hosting, DOI registration and long-term preservation. Authors from low-income regions or institutions without funding support may apply for a partial or full waiver according to the journal’s waiver policy.

Ethical and Transparent Publishing

JATR endorses the Budapest Open Access Initiative (BOAI) and the DOAJ Principles of Transparency and Best Practice in Scholarly Publishing. All editorial and financial practices are transparent and public. The journal:

  • Does not charge submission fees or hidden costs.
  • Provides clear information on editorial procedures and peer review.
  • Maintains separation between editorial decisions and financial operations.
  • Publishes APC and waiver details openly on the website.
  • Declares all partnerships and sponsorships within each publication year.

Metadata Distribution and Accessibility

All JATR articles include machine-readable metadata embedded in JSON-LD format following Schema.org and Crossref standards. This ensures interoperability across databases, library catalogues and AI discovery systems.

  • Every article receives a DOI, ORCID-linked author metadata, funding identifiers, and license information.
  • Metadata are harvested via OAI-PMH (https://www.addictiontherjournal.com/oai).
  • Accessible to indexing services including Google Scholar, BASE, Crossref Metadata Plus, and institutional repositories.

This technical commitment guarantees that open access extends beyond free reading to full digital discoverability.

Archiving and Long-Term Preservation

All JATR content is archived in multiple secure repositories (Portico, PKP PN, CLOCKSS) ensuring permanent access. Withdrawn or retracted articles remain publicly visible with watermarked notices to preserve the scholarly record. Version control via CrossMark indicates updates, corrections or retractions.

Reader Rights and Responsibilities

Readers may:

  • Download, distribute and cite JATR articles without restriction.
  • Use content in derivative works such as teaching materials, systematic reviews or policy documents with appropriate citation.
  • Translate or adapt content provided attribution and license terms are maintained.

Readers should not misrepresent authors’ work or alter data interpretation when reusing figures or excerpts.

Commitment to Open Science

Open access at JATR aligns with broader Open Science principles—encouraging data sharing, open peer review, and transparent methodologies. Authors are encouraged to deposit data in recognized repositories and cite dataset DOIs within the reference list. Collaboration with initiatives such as OpenAIRE and OSF enhances openness across the research lifecycle.
