Overview

The Journal of Addiction Therapy and Research (JATR) publishes all content under an open-access model. To sustain editorial operations, peer review, archiving, and digital publishing infrastructure, authors (or their institutions/funders) are required to pay an Article Processing Charge (APC) upon acceptance.

Article Processing Charge (APC) Structure

APCs vary depending on the article type, length, and complexity of editorial services. The current APCs (as of November 2025) are listed below:

Waivers and Discounts

JATR supports equitable access to publishing by offering partial or full APC waivers based on authorship and funding background. Waivers are considered for:

• Authors from low-income or lower-middle-income countries (as defined by the World Bank).
• Early-career researchers without grant support.
• Invited contributions to special issues or thematic collections.
• Editorial Board members and peer reviewers contributing to JATR.

Authors can request a waiver at submission through the “APC Waiver” form or by emailing [email protected].

Invoicing and Payment

1. Invoices are issued after manuscript acceptance.
2. Payments can be made online via credit card, bank transfer, or institutional payment gateway.
3. Payments must reference the manuscript ID and invoice number for accurate processing.
4. Authors will receive a digital receipt confirming payment within 3 business days.

Payment security complies with PCI DSS and GDPR data-protection standards.

Transparency and Compliance

In line with COPE, DOAJ, and Plan S requirements, JATR ensures transparency by:

• Publicly displaying APC rates and waiver conditions.
• Maintaining consistent pricing across author groups and countries.
• Separating editorial decisions from payment discussions (no fee before acceptance).
• Reporting APC usage in the journal’s annual financial transparency statement.

Refund Policy

JATR’s Refund Policy outlines refund eligibility in cases of duplicate payment, withdrawal before peer review, or technical errors. No refunds are provided once publication is complete and DOI assigned.

Third-Party Funding and Institutional Support

Many institutions, funders, and consortia cover APCs on behalf of authors. JATR accepts payments from recognized organizations such as the Wellcome Trust, NIH, and European Research Council.

Authors should include funder information during submission for accurate acknowledgment and invoicing.

Currency and Exchange Rates

All APCs are charged in USD. For authors paying in local currencies, bank conversion rates on the transaction date apply. Transaction or intermediary fees are borne by the payer.

Ethical Separation of Editorial and Financial Decisions

Editorial evaluation is completely independent of financial transactions. Manuscripts are assessed on academic merit, not author ability to pay. Waivers are processed only after acceptance to avoid conflict of interest.
